Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Performer automatic tuning system?

The Performer™ is a computerized mechanical tuning system that adjusts the tensions of the strings, making it possible to keep your guitar in tune and change tuning while you play. It only adjusts string tension; nothing in the system comes between you and your amplifier.

What are the benefits of using the Performer?

• Always being in tune is a great thing
• Change tuning or pitch while you play
• Standard tuning to drop D instantly
• Reduce the need for additional guitars
• Avoid embarrassing tuning problems on stage
• Save money by minimizing tuning time in studio
• Set new moods by changing tuning DURING a song
• Synchronize your tuning changes to match a song's   tempo
• Take your song writing in new directions

How does the Performer work?

A small computer and mechanical device mounted inside your guitar works at your command. The computer understands how your guitar works and reacts to changes in temperature and humidity. It then directs the mechanical device to get the results you want. Besides play, all you have to do is strum your strings, push a button or step on a footswitch.

What do the pushbuttons do?

The pushbuttons are used to control the system. Press the arrow buttons to move through menus. Other pushbuttons have specific functions:

SEL      Select menus and functions on the LCD                 readout

END     Go back one level in the menu system

INS        Insert tunings and spaces while editing

DEL      Delete characters while editing

EDT      Activate the edit mode

CPY      Copy a tuning for insertion and editing                 anywhere in the user library

TCH      Touch-up your tuning

OST      On Screen Tuner displays the note, octave                 and cent value of all six strings at the same                 time

How accurate is it?

It is accurate to within 2 cents over the entire tuning range.

How long does it take to tune my guitar with the Performer?

Including the time to strum the strings, it averages about 3-5 seconds to get in tune.

How long does it take to change tunings with the Performer?

One second per whole step, e.g., standard to drop D tuning takes one second.

Does it tune each string simultaneously?

Yes, the Performer tunes up all six at once.

What happens if I press the wrong button?

Nothing! You cannot hurt the system or your guitar. The Performer even has a special "stage" mode that helps prevent performance problems due to unintentional button pushes.

How do I create and store my own tunings?

An edit mode is provided to design and store up to 240 of your own tunings in 40 user menus.

How do I access the tunings in the Performer system?

You can access any of the tunings via the on-board push buttons or optional footswitch.

Is it difficult to change strings?

No, the system has been designed for quick and easy string changes.

Can I run "wireless" with the Performer?

Yes, with the optional battery pack to power the Performer, you can use any available wireless system to move freely.

Do I need any technical or computer skills to operate the Performer?

We've made using The Performer fast, simple and easy. You need no technical or computer skills to use it. Just plug in your guitar, touch it up and go. Within minutes you will be jumping between tunings and playing riffs you've never thought possible. Programming your favorite tunings, storing them in memory, changing strings, and touching up the system is just as simple. The system comes with everything you need and help is always just a phone call away. (970) 482-9132.

What types of guitars can be retrofitted with the Performer?

Currently we support any guitar body that closely resembles Les Paul, Les Paul Special, Stratocaster or Telecaster body shapes.

What about string gage and guitar neck settings?

When placing an order, you choose the string gage set and string brand. The mechanical device is then intonated at our factory and delivered to you according to your specifications. The guitar neck is also set up based on your preference of action setting and style of playing. Heavier gage (12 or 13 gage) sets are offered with limited string range options. Please call if you are interested in heavy or custom gage sets.

What changes does the Performer installation make to my guitar?

The installation does not interfere with the existing guitar audio circuits. From a sound standpoint, the only change we've measured is a modest increase in sustain. Some wood is removed and replaced with the computer and mechanical device. We add a locking nut and roller bridge to facilitate accuracy. The retrofit adds approximately 8 ounces to the original weight of your guitar, depending on the wood density of the guitar.

How does the Performer affect the neck of the guitar?

We currently have about 50 systems in the hands of pro musicians, some for over ten years. While minor adjustments have been made to a few of these systems, we've never experienced any major problems.

Does the Performer affect intonation?

No. Intonation is altered by changes in string length. The Performer changes tunings by adjusting the tension of the strings while keeping the string length constant.

What does the Performer system cost?

The installation price for the tuning system in a Les Paul or Telecaster style guitar is $3,399. The Stratocaster style guitar requires additional work and is priced at $3,899. Contact the company for additional information.
